I really want to draw fanart for FW, lots of it, regularly, make it my new muse... but PBs have always been the bane of my art motivation. My style is not quite realistic enough to nail a real person's look 100%, and my goal is to just... not... care. I'm going to try and use PBs as a starting point, a guideline for what a character looks like, and focus more on capturing their personality.
THIS IS MOSTLY ME THINKING OUT LOUD. I ALREADY HAVE A LOT OF IDEAS. I just need to stop being a perfectionist and enjoy adding some visuals to the story.
That definitely makes sense as a way to approach PBs to me? :o It's hard to find a PB that entirely fits the concept in your head in terms of physical appearance, attitude, style, etc. anyway. I rarely have one that actually matches up perfectly.
Also: !!!! ♥ I can't wait to see what you come up with! :o
fwiw i really liked those commissions you did of the gbhs characters last month exactly because they captured the spirit/personality of the chars. like, they also looked like their pbs, but it wasn't like "oh, a drawing of willa holland" so much as it was like "a drawing of ari!"
i fully support your not-care-itude. i even mentioned it on tumblr a couple of weeks ago. draw what your heart tells you to draw! throw PBs to the wind!!!
Also coming to echo all the good stuff! PBs are just a necessity, in the end, and I imagine we'd all have at least slightly different looking kids if we could magically conjure humans!! Getting a general feel of the look and then getting the personality is really what makes the pics look like them, and you did that amaaaazingly for your GB pics
I def always think about it like book adaptation casting. This face was the closest fit to the character in my head. And I mean most Harry Potter fanart that I've seen doesn't have Harry looking like Dan Radcliffe.
SO FOR REAL and I know it’s not like feasible or realistic but I’ve always a little bit wanted to have a game without pbs for this actual reason? PBs kind of tend to kill my word pictures bc I feel Super Dumb describing someone people can literally see right there... But since I def imagine differences I should do more of it anyway..
HEY SAME. I know a lot of people like icons and PBs but they have a lot of cons too. More often than not, I make the character first, then look for the pb, and have to look through so many faces to find the right one. And then, if you want to change your character's appearance in any way, but your pb doesn't have that look, you have to sort of keep reminding people that their appearance doesn't match their icon anymore.
Ahhh yeah!! I tend to do it this way too, except when a face just demands me to use it. But it’s virtually impossible to cast my imagination all the time. Jeez. I find myself describing the physicality of people rather than their appearance a lot kind of to compromise, because sure you know what their face is, but NOW I WILL SPECIFY EXACTLY HOW THEY MOVE :///
YES i love this. it's hard once you commit to a pb bc it's like "Well now everyone is going to assume they look exactly like their icons even though in my head they differ from their icons in xyz ways" so i just... have to keep saying it in my writing and hope that people pay attention enough to remember :(
a lot of the time i get ppl describing them as they are in their icons anyway and i'm just like sigh. what can you do
I don't start characters from pbs but they do like impact how I play characters. Todd definitely got louder and dumber after I switched him and Ari's sneakiness had a lot to do with her smirking/sneering icons
Your GB art was perfect, and in a lot of ways, looked more like the characters than the PBs do? Or like, at least it captured them better. Like others have said, none of my pbs were really ~perfect~ anyway.
