i read a lot of excruciatingly terrible fanfic for fun
the absolute worst one is the hanahaki disease (or whatever) where you just fucking die of unrequited love. it's AWFUL i don't why people keep writing it
unrequited love being treated as tragic and romantic creeps me out which probably says a lot about me. although i guess i see the appeal since i only enjoy magical soulmates when the characters involved absolutely fuckin hate it
ooh i love tragic and at least semi-unrequited love and in fact its basically the only shippy stuff im into but im real choosy about it bc if i catch a whiff of entitlement (or any sense at all that the other person is obligated to return feelings) ill ralph for REAL
my first fandom ship was wesley/lilah from angel if that communicates the tone
Edited (ill stop reading if they get together without dying first) 2018-09-25 22:01 (UTC)
i need a tight lens on the person's fulminant agony as they're forced to repeatedly confront their inadequacies in the company (or ideally, via the hand) of their secret beloved
no tho weirdly its not the shipping part that gets me its the revealing of feelings? who was the person who said that they feel like they're doing a big betrayal by revealing their crushes bc im same but with any moderate-large emotion
lol yes i've seen waaaaay too much shit that's like "it's inherently noble and beautiful for this dude to love a woman who doesn't love him back, why won't someone love him like he Deserves"
i don't mind unrequited love obviously it's more of a narrative tone and/or fandom perception thing and i've seen way too much of it slide a certain way with the entitlement
